Prime Minister Orders Shivee-Ovoo Mine to Accelerate Winter-Readiness, Tighten Spending and Boost Workforce Incentives

Published: 2025-08-17

Prime Minister G. Zandanshatar inspected the state-linked Shivee-Ovoo brown coal mine, a strategic supplier covering 28% of national power generation coal and major shares for Ulaanbaatar’s CHP-4 and Amgalan plants. The mine targets 2.5 million tons in 2025 and is 60% complete, but faces mounting challenges: debt, constrained diesel, explosives and wagon supply, and a seven-year soil-slip zone with a 1 km fissure that has halted extraction in affected areas. He ordered a step-up in winter-preparedness—finishing maintenance before freezing conditions and fast-tracking spare parts procurement—while instructing leadership to improve planning, add reserves, modernize equipment, and settle liabilities. He also warned against new high-interest borrowing and inefficient purchases, calling for unified procurement standards. Some issues will go to Cabinet next Wednesday for expedited review.

Published: 2025-08-17

City authorities have begun repairing a major hot water and heating transmission line serving Ulaanbaatar’s 10th microdistrict in Bayangol District, following a two-week outage that cut service to 1,713 households, two kindergartens, and one business across the 5th, 6th, and 30th khoroos. The disruption, which coincides with the back-to-school period, prompted repeated complaints from residents. District officials coordinated with the Energy Ministry, the Ulaanbaatar District Heating Network, the city governor’s office, and the Housing and Public Utilities Authority to initiate phased repairs. The episode highlights infrastructure fragility in older residential zones and the multi-agency coordination required to resolve utility failures. Prolonged hot water suspensions can affect hygiene, childcare operations, and household costs, underscoring the need for preventive maintenance and quicker response protocols in dense urban neighborhoods.

Pilot Accessibility Drive Tests New Natural-Stone Sidewalks and Public Services in Ulaanbaatar

Ulaanbaatar officials and disability advocates walked a 2.5 km route to audit urban accessibility under the “Let’s Go Out from Home” campaign. The city is standardizing 59.6 km of sidewalks across 15 downtown sites using natural stone, aiming to remove trip hazards and improve wheelchair and stroller access. Auditors reported persistent barriers at shops and eateries, including missing ramps and threshold obstacles, and reviewed public transport usability. > "In Mongolia, six out of ten people with disabilities acquired them later in life. Night Patrol Targets High-Speed E-Motorbikes Violating Traffic Rules in Ulaanbaatar

Published: 2025-08-17

Traffic Police conducted late-night patrols across key corridors in Ulaanbaatar—Enkhtaivany and Marshal bridges, Narnii Road, and residential districts—focusing on loud, high-powered e-motorbikes (Sur-Ron) and motorcycles flouting traffic laws. Officers observed underage riders, many without helmets or license plates, accelerating through red lights and reaching speeds up to 80–100 km/h. The report underscores growing public-safety risks tied to electric motorbikes’ rising popularity among 16–35-year-olds, noting gaps in parental oversight, social norms, and enforcement. Authorities are scaling nighttime checks to curb noise pollution and dangerous riding. The piece frames e-motorbikes as a serious road-safety issue requiring tighter control over modified exhaust vehicles and clearer legal rules for powerful electric two-wheelers.
